Perception and performance of the nursing team in caring for patients with suicide behavior

Objective: to understand the perception and performance of Nursing team in a hospital emergency service care patients after attempting suicide. Methods: exploratory study, with qualitative approach, carried out through semi-structured interviews professionals who work an Emergency Service. The were transcribed analyzed as their content following Bardin's thematic model. Results: seven nurses four technicians participated average age 36 years, most them female. Suicide attempts are often associated ‘psychic pain’ that is opposed principles life preservation; such attitude has caused suicidal behavior be misinterpreted by health professionals. Conclusion: demonstrated stereotyped ‘pre-concept’ full taboos about attempted suicide, which triggered more directed physical needs protocol formalities. Few reported carrying holistic empathic care, so necessary for these people. In this sense, importance urgency training identification suicide risks continuity treatment surviving individuals emphasized.
